Researching New Projects
One of the most important aspects of our trips to Ghana is to visit new communities and research potential new water projects. On this trip, we visited numerous communities and are currently looking at how we can help the communities of Obo, Kojonkanse, Asasefufuom, Atobiase, Mangoase, Oboyan, Nkawkaw Amanfrom and Kofi Dede!
We cannot do this without the knowledge of our local NGO, the Salormey Volunteers Group, and especially the relationships that Fred and Rebeca have with the community leaders. We met several chiefs and discussed their water needs, the medical problems they commonly suffer and how we can best help them.
Simply drilling or repairing a borehole and thinking it’s “job done” is never a good solution. Only by interacting with the community and their leaders, by gaining their buy-in to help support the maintenance and correct use of the pumps, can we hope to provide a long term, sustainable solution.
